What is the best hike on Mount Pilatus?

At the top, the Tomlishorn Flower Trail; as a hike up the mountain, Fräkmüntegg to Pilatus Kulm via Klimsen. Together they make the best Pilatus day for most walkers.

What is the Tomlishorn Flower Trail like?

A well-secured panoramic path, rated T1, from Pilatus Kulm to the Tomlishorn (2,128 m), the highest point of Pilatus. It takes about 1.5 hours there and back and is open from mid-June to October.

The path runs along the south side of the ridge with railings on the steeper stretches and information boards about the alpine plants beside it. In early summer the slopes are full of flowers; later the views over the Alps to the south are the main draw. Ibex are often seen here, especially early and late in the day. Take a warm layer: the ridge is often breezy. Beyond the Tomlishorn the ridge continues west as a T4 route for experienced mountaineers only; it is not covered here.

How long does the Esel take?

About 15 minutes up a stone stairway from the terrace. The Esel (2,118 m) is the classic viewpoint above the hotels, though not the highest point.

The Esel is the peak you see right above the Hotel Pilatus-Kulm, and the most visited viewpoint on the mountain. The steps are well made and the top gives a view over Lucerne, the lake and, on clear days, north across the Swiss Plateau to the Jura. It is the one to do if you only have a few minutes before your train or cableway.

What is the Oberhaupt loop?

A 20-minute circuit over the Oberhaupt (2,106 m), the peak on the other side of the summit station from the Esel.

The Oberhaupt loop is usually quieter than the Esel and looks out over the lake and the Alps. It pairs well with the Dragon path, which starts nearby, for an hour of short walks without any real effort. On autumn days with a sea of fog below, both peaks rise clear above the cloud.

What is the Dragon path?

A short loop through galleries cut into the summit cliff, with window openings over the lake. It takes 20 to 40 minutes, depending on stops, and starts at the end of the Panorama Gallery.

The Dragon path is not a hike up the mountain but a walk inside it: level galleries hewn into the rock, lit by openings that frame the view. It is the best option when the wind is strong on the ridge. In winter parts of it are not continuously passable.

The name comes from the legends. In 1421, so the story goes, a dragon flying over Pilatus dropped a stone near a farmer named Rudolf Stämpfli. The dragon stone is on display at the Natur-Museum Luzern; a CT scan in 2007 showed it is a ball of fired clay. Another legend held that Pontius Pilate's restless ghost haunted a lake on the mountain, and medieval Lucerne once banned ascents for fear of the storms he might raise.

What is the best real hike up to the summit?

Fräkmüntegg to Pilatus Kulm via the Klimsensattel and the Chriesiloch: 3.8 km, 797 m of ascent and about 2 hours 40 minutes on a demanding T3 mountain trail.

Ride the gondola from Kriens to Fräkmüntegg (1,416 m), then follow the Heitertannliweg across the slopes to the Klimsensattel (1,866 m), where a small chapel stands near the cliff edge. The last section goes up through the Chriesiloch, a rock cleft with a steep metal staircase, and comes out at the summit terrace. Are there easy walks lower down on Pilatus?

Yes. The forest walk from Krienseregg to Fräkmüntegg takes about 2 hours, and the Drachenmoor path is an easy T1 circuit of 1 to 2 hours from Krienseregg through protected high moorland that can be walked all year.

Both start at the gondola stations above Kriens, so they are good on cloudy days when the summit is in fog, and for families. The Krienseregg to Fräkmüntegg walk rises gently through forest via Schönenboden, with 397 m of ascent. The Drachenmoor path loops from Krienseregg through protected high moorland, a quiet contrast to the busy summit. For a longer descent, the trail from Fräkmüntegg via Alp Gschwänd to Hergiswil takes about 2 hours 10 minutes. At Fräkmüntegg there is also the Fräkigaudi summer toboggan and a large rope park.

Where can you see ibex and alpine choughs?

Ibex are often seen on the Flower Trail and around the Tomlishorn, especially at dawn and dusk. Alpine choughs, black birds with yellow bills, gather at the summit terraces.

The return of ibex to Pilatus was approved in 1961, with animals from Piz Albris in Graubünden released on the Mattalp and more from Valais about 40 years later, and the colony now numbers about 100. Keep your distance and let them move on their own. Pilatus-Bahnen runs guided Ibex Safaris from June to October. The alpine choughs are bold and will land beside your table; do not feed them, as bread and snacks are bad for wild birds.
